About the day

This sailing begins at Sutton Staithe, which lies at the end of a branch off the River Ant. This stretch is prime territory for otters and kingfishers. We will head downstream, passing through picturesque Broads scenery until we reach Barton Broad, the second largest of the Norfolk Broads and rumoured to be where Admiral Nelson learnt to sail. This area is rich in wildlife, so keep your binoculars to hand. From Barton we head upstream, along narrow channels to Dilham Staithe. Located in the far north of the Broads, the peaceful village of Dilham is where the Broads' only canal joins the river network.

This sailing will be aboard one of our three wherry yachts: Olive, Norada or White Moth. These surviving wherry yachts were all built by the Wroxham based boatbuilder and designer Ernest Collins. They spent over three decades within his hire fleet, followed by a period of mixed fortunes in private ownership after World War II, before they were reunited in 2012 by the Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust.

Please park at the The Village Hall, The Street, Dilham, NR28 9PT. A minibus will collect passengers at 9.30am and drive to Sutton, where your wherry will be moored, in time for a 10.00am departure.

We operate on "wherry time", subject to wind and tide, and so our arrival and any interim stops may not always be as planned.
